Chaired by Bernard Swanepoel, the Hydrogen Economy Discussion is a one-day conference featuring key stakeholders – government, hydrogen project developers, mining companies, investors, hydrogen equipment suppliers, fuel cell and electrolyser manufacturers and independent advisers. Discussions will focus on the opportunities and challenges of developing a green hydrogen economy in South Africa and beyond.

The agenda for the 3rd edition of the conference, to take place on Wednesday 19th July at the Country Club Johannesburg and online, has been released.

Features include:

  • A discussion on South Africa’s strategy for driving the development of the green hydrogen economy, with Dr Rebecca Maserumule, chief director: Hydrogen & Energy, Department of Science & Innovation, Sietse van der Woude, senior executive: Modernisation and Safety, Minerals Council South Africa and Maidei Matika, chief investment facilitator, Gauteng IDZ.
  • A conversation on commercialising green hydrogen opportunities, chaired by Themba Msimang, project manager: Sustainable Energy, SA-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and featuring Darryn Allan, policy adviser – Investment, Energy, Mining, Delegation of the European Union to South Africa and Jonathan Metcalfe, business case development manager, Enertrag.
  • A discussion on the challenges of developing an infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage and transportation, with Tumi Kgomo, CEO, EPCM Global Engineering, Salah Mahdy, global director – Hydrogen, Chart Industries & Howden, and Neil Woolcock, business development and commercial director, Air Liquide.
  • A panel on the role of PGMs in the development of the hydrogen economy, featuring Fahmida Smith, Principal Market Development, Anglo American Platinum and vice chair, African Hydrogen Partnership, Seten Naidoo, executive – New Commodities, Impala Platinum, and Dr Jonathan Butler, head of Business Development, Mitsubishi Corporation.
  • A conversation on investment opportunities in green hydrogen, chaired by Mardé van Wyk, venture partner, AP Ventures, and featuring Nadège Hopman, deputy head of Regional Representation, Pretoria, European Investment Bank and Mike Peo, head: Infrastructure, Energy and Telecommunications, Nedbank.
  • A project showcase session featuring hydrogen projects from South Africa, Namibia and Italy. Speakers include: Marco Raffinetti, CEO, Hyphen Energy, Andries van der Linde, head Renewable Energy, SSC Group, and Michele Ferrazzini, CEO, ESE Engineering Services for Energy.

The discussions promise to deliver robust, forward-looking conversations about the real potential of green hydrogen and how South Africa can take advantage of the anticipated demand in the drive towards clean, sustainable energy.

The Hydrogen Economy Discussion will take place alongside the 5th annual Coal & Energy Transition Day which will be held on 18th July.
