Emalahleni, previously known as Witbank, falls under the Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga. The name Emalahleni translates to ‘place of coal’, a commodity that has become synonymous with the town. Due to the large concentration of high-quality coal in the area, there are more than 22 collieries present, owned and operated by a variety of companies. Additionally, there are a number of Eskom power stations in the area which rely on a steady supply of coal from the mines – which in turn generates good business for the local residents.
