Across Africa, loadshedding remains a crippling challenge, severely impacting economies, industries, and daily life. As energy disruptions continue to hinder growth and productivity, the Africa Energy Indaba 2025, taking place from 4–6 March in Cape Town, South Africa, will serve as a platform for stakeholders to explore sustainable energy solutions to eliminate loadshedding and mitigate its impact on businesses.

The Africa Energy Indaba will bring together government leaders, industry experts, investors, and innovators to address energy security, unlock investment opportunities, and showcase cutting-edge technologies designed to stabilise Africa’s power sector. Supplied by Africa Energy Indaba 2025
Accelerated investment in energy solutions – critical
Earlier this month, South Africa once again reintroduced loadshedding, highlighting the ongoing instability of the country’s power grid. Countries like Zimbabwe and Zambia continue to experience prolonged power outages due to their heavy reliance on the Kariba Dam, where fluctuating water levels have drastically reduced hydroelectric generation. In Zimbabwe, businesses and households endure power cuts lasting up to 18 hours a day, stifling productivity and economic growth. Zambia faces similar struggles, with industries, including mining and manufacturing, grappling with power shortages that hinder operations and investment. Without urgent action to diversify energy sources and strengthen grid reliability, millions across Africa will remain vulnerable to persistent electricity crises, slowing down development and regional integration.
With businesses and households in Africa facing disruptions, the urgent need for long-term, sustainable energy solutions has never been clearer. The return of and continuing risk of rolling blackouts serves as a stark reminder that Africa must accelerate investment in energy infrastructure, diversification and innovative power solutions to ensure energy security.
Unlocking gas reserves
Natural gas is emerging as one of the supporting solutions. Africa holds over 620 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, accounting for approximately 7% of the world’s total. As global demand for cleaner energy sources rises, the continent’s gas production is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4% through to 2030, positioning Africa as a significant player in the global gas market.
Liz Hart, managing director of the Africa Energy Indaba, remarked, “The Africa Gas Forum provides a dedicated space to explore the vast opportunities in Africa’s gas sector. It is a vital step toward unlocking the full potential of these resources to power sustainable development and economic transformation across the continent.”
Africa Gas Forum focus areas:
- Exploration and production opportunities: Africa remains one of the least explored regions for natural gas. The Forum will spotlight significant basins such as the Orange Basin and other promising reserves in Zimbabwe and onshore Namibia, emphasising their potential to meet both domestic and international energy demands.
- Overcoming gas monetisation challenges: Experts will discuss infrastructure deficits, regulatory frameworks, and innovative financing models to address barriers to monetising Africa’s gas reserves. Strategies for developing LNG export facilities and fostering regional energy trade will be central to the conversation.
- Case studies of success: Delegates will gain insights from successful gas projects across Africa, including advancements in Mozambique, Egypt and Nigeria, where robust policies and strategic investments have unlocked gas resources for economic and environmental benefits.
