Earlier this month, South Africa once again reintroduced loadshedding, highlighting the ongoing instability of the country’s power grid. Countries like Zimbabwe and Zambia continue to experience prolonged power outages due to their heavy reliance on the Kariba Dam, where fluctuating water levels have drastically reduced hydroelectric generation. In Zimbabwe, businesses and households endure power cuts lasting up to 18 hours a day, stifling productivity and economic growth. Zambia faces similar struggles, with industries, including mining and manufacturing, grappling with power shortages that hinder operations and investment. Without urgent action to diversify energy sources and strengthen grid reliability, millions across Africa will remain vulnerable to persistent electricity crises, slowing down development and regional integration.

Unlocking gas reserves
Natural gas is emerging as one of the supporting solutions. Africa holds over 620 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, accounting for approximately 7% of the world’s total. As global demand for cleaner energy sources rises, the continent’s gas production is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4% through to 2030, positioning Africa as a significant player in the global gas market.
